Wet Ribbons EP#40 - fin?

Howdy folks. Welcome to episode 40! Potentially the last Wet Ribbons episode to lay your ears on. That's right. 40 shows and about a year and a half down the line, we're gonna come to a grinding halt and steep a while. Personal life is getting a little stressful and out of hand, and there's a bunch of non-radio things eating up time and concentration. It's been a pleasure spinning you some of my favourite bands of all time, and a great learning experience for me to see all the folks out there that actually give a shit. Ha.

You may expect this milestone episode to be a monster, but I hate to admit, it's probably really hit and miss. As a (somewhat) badass skateboarding, trespassing, wall painting, bottle smashing, window breaking, drug taking adolescent in the 90s —most of my musical exposure (that wasn't country, via my father) was from the "alternative" music video rotation on tv. And this podcast is nothing but! love it, or hate it, but years later this is the stuff that brings me back to a much simpler time. Definitely gives you some insight to how a nourished my love for a good pop song, punk rock, and keeping music fun fun fun.

So, that said, I can't say stay tuned for EP#41, because it may not ever exist. However, you can definitely stay in touch via the liquid vapours over at www.theliquidvapours.com —we're definitely going to come at ya with some hits this summer. More songs, more shows. So, stay tuned. 'til then …ta-ta!

3rd and final episode in our Wet Ribbons marathon, and it's V-day special with spectacular derby girl, pole dancer extraordinaire —Annie Biotix.

Wet Ribbons EP#38

2nd episode of our 3 day wet ribbons marathon. Pop open a bottle of Pinot Grigio, sit back and let the savage sounds of rock 'n' roll blast you in the face.

Episode#39, coming at ya shortly. Our V- day special, and marathon finally.

—j

Wet Ribbons EP#37 - The East Worst of

It's been a few months comin' and finally, we bring you the all east coast punk rock hits you've been waiting for. We have most provinces represented (no NL unfortunately) and we even get to spin a few 45s. Big thanks to Strawman Tom for the Moncton set suggestions and FOL 45.

Got another mix show in the queue. Some really great new bands I ran into, and some new records from a couple months ago that I haven't gotten a chance to spin yet. And THEN we have our v-day special coming at ya with an appearance by sexy cohost Annie Biotix. So, stay tuned, and stay gooned.

Wet Ribbons EP#36

Alright, we're back. Usually these shows are thrown together on a saturday, with many many drinks, but today is a special day on the East Coast, because we're experiencing one of our (probably numerous) "heavy snowfalls." Everything in town is shut down, and life is basically cancelled. Also, this week we hit some incredible lows, like, -36ºC, -22ºC, etc ... so I thought, what a better time to broadcast. Everyone is at home, feeling shitty about winter, so let's bring a little summer back.

Spinning some 60s dragster, hot rod, and surf tunes (and a couple outlaw cowboy cover tunes for good measure). Couple technical glitches on the live broadcast, but heck, who cares.

Wet Ribbons EP#35

Children! It's only rock 'n' roll. Turn it up!
I decided not to do a 2010 recap show since I just can't find suitable tracks from 2010. So, here's another mix-tape show. All hits! No fillers!

If you're following on twitter, you already know that we're doing an East Coast show soon —bands send in your tracks!
And you also already know that there's some changes heading your way in the near future. With any luck, we're gonna be improving your pirate radio programming by at least 200%. And since you've been shying away from the ol'tip jar, that's a pretty damn good return on your investment.

Anyway. Thanks for tuning in. Catch you on EP#36!

Wet Ribbons EP#34

Alright kids. 2010 is no more. This is our first show of 2011, and not only is it not a recap show, but it's a totally thrown together, last minute mix show. That said, we're playing lots of great tracks from Mevio Music Alley, and we even have a little set of tracks from white moon recordings, a neat little online label.

I'm hoping (yet again) for some changes to Wet Ribbons in 2011. So, stay tuned, stay alert, and follow us on twitter. Seriously. If you're on facebook, we're there too. But I only have the time to bother with twitter ... so get on that, follow us, and you can catch us when we go live next time. For reals.

Oh ... don't forget to head on over to thee radio show and check out the the live all vinyl set at babas lounge here in Charlottetown. Charlottetown didn't know great music until that Tuesday night.

cheers

Wet Ribbons EP#33 vs Thee Radio Show EP#20

Dum, dum da-dum, dum, da-dum, da-dum, da-dum ...
As promised, another rock 'n' roll sobriety test from your whiskey faced hosts, J Vapour & John Bruce! Streaming live in the wee hours of December 22nd. So, not only is this the second official wet ribbons / thee radio show split show, and not only are we at the WR HQ here in Charlottetown, PEI, but we even have a theme lined up for ya! We're spinning 2 tracks each, from the last 6 decades! Great variety here, for sure. Lots of hits, with only a few misses, and lots of drunken banter!

Wet Ribbons EP#32

Alright, alright, we're burning through the hits this week! This is regularly scheduled show this week, and our first "mix tape" show in a while. Hope you enjoyed our xmas special. Drank maybe a wee bit too much wine on this show ... was startin' to get some stutter action going, but heck ... that's my charm isn't it?

If you're living life unfulfilled in the dark ages, then you might want to get yourself a twitter account, or a facebook if you're into that stuff, and follow Wet Ribbons! That's how you're going to find out when to catch us live. Then you can chat, critique, get me talking off track, and send in some requests (if i have my shit together anyway, ha!).

But you're also going to want to subscribe to the podcast as well, get this stuff automatically (and gives me a better idea of who's actually listening to this mess!). Just Click in the "Rss" logo in your address bar, or there's also a couple "subscribe" buttons scattered on the page, OR just go to the itunes store, and search "Wet Ribbons" —easy peasy.

Do it! See you later in the week for EP#33

Wet Ribbons EP#31 - xmas special

Bullshit. version 2. X-mas.
Spinning the best of the worst, this is our xmas special, and the only xmas songs in my catalog (Save a few mp3s sent in to me last minute). Tomorrow we're back on earth. playing some dirty rock 'n' roll awesomeness, but only to get even crazier with a potential live all vinyl show at a bar next week, and an overly anticipated (don't lie) rematch of Wet Ribbons Vs Thee Radio Show, as John Bruce travels to WR head quarters this time around, for some drinks and good times. We're gonna spin some of the best tunes from 60s/70s/80s/90s/ and today!

For real.

Oh yeah. That chat window that appears when we're live ... don't bother with it. It's garbage. If you wanna get in on the action, hit us up on twitter @wetribbons.
ciao

Wet Ribbons ep#30 —Surf!

For fuck's sake. We finally got to do our surf show. And it's no disappointment. man or astroman, ventures, fifty foot combo, and canada's own urban surf kings, and shadowy men on a shadowy planet. we're playing the good stuff, son. We're spinning a ton of records, mostly on a "lend me your surf" basis with the one and only DUGOST (gracias).

Next week, we're taking a break from radio and bringing you some live rock 'n' roll in the form of the liquid vapours, live in halifax this friday, and moncton on saturday, dec 11th. my broken finger is still fucked, and I haven't seen the liquid vapours boys in a couple months, so our halifax show is bound to be ... unique.

—j

Wet Ribbons EP#29

All 60s garage this time around!
Still working on some techy things as far as getting the live version of the show running smooth. But heck ... we're getting there. Thanks to everyone who tuned in live. We're also going to try and nail down a show time of "saturday evening at some point" each week, or every two —but since you're following our twitting feed like a hawk, you already know when we're airing stuff.

oh yeah, that surf show. soon soon soon. Also be on the look out for some new demos by the one and only bill vapour. Be spinning them on a show very soon.

—j

Wet Ribbons EP#28 - Live!

So, we're trying hard to fix these technical glitches, but this episode is without any luck. For those listening to the live stream saturday night, you may have been cut off for a bit. Actually I have no idea how long, haha. This is because of my monitors being on a different output then the one feeding you internet folks. And since the other output had a faulty dollarama cord, the bullshit I was listening to probably fizzled out on your end. oops. But you should be thankful, cause this show was shit.

Essentially, these tracks are overrated bullshit bands and artists that I fucking can't stand one way or another. HOWEVER, it was my task to find a song or two that I actually didn't mind. It was hard. Really fucking hard. And i still mostly hate this show. So, see for yourself. Comment. But don't give me shit about how the beatles, stones, dylan, blah blah blah. I don't give a shit. Seriously. It's boring.

but, yeah. we'll see you on EP#29 for some surf awesomeness! Probably live! So, follow wet ribbons on twitter and find out when we're airing this junk.

—j

Wet Ribbons EP#27 - LIVE!

So, most of you are going "live, what the fuck?" and yeah, I know, the show is usually recorded Live, but this episode was broadcasting live! For the first time in Wet Ribbons history, we broadcasted live to a select audience for testing purposes —and the show went off with many bugs and hitches. But we're going to try and figure out some of this technical garbage this week, to bring you some live radio on EP#28. And the only way to stay informed about show times, is over on our twitter page, or on our little twitter feed to the right of this blog. For now, thems your options. Deal with it.
But take advantage, make requests, and let us all know what you like, or don't like —and then I can tell you to shove-it ... LIVE!

As for this episode ... dispite it's glitches, the tunes are better then average ... beaten hearts, demon's claws, tandoori knights, the monsters!, and tons more.

Wet Ribbons EP#26 - Spook Show Halloween Special

Howdy folks!
Time to sit back with a massive glass of red wine, invite over some undead friends, and blast this here episode for all to witness. Annie Biotix (erin) grabs a seat in our (still unnamed) studio to play ya some tracks, and well, things ran a little long. We're running something like 1:48 minutes or something. But at least it's filled with all your monster greats, a la Bobby "Borris" Picket, Kim Lenz, Cramps, Dead Elvis and his one man grave, Zombina and the skeletones! and tons more!

So, whether you're heading out to some lame ass "dress-up party" with colleagues from work that has nothing to do with halloween, or you're just sitting at home watching the kiddies barf up toffee, you had better get at least a proper dose of halloween and listen to this show.

Oh, and don't let the Day of the Dead slip through your skeletal fingers either!
And we'll see ya on on the other side, Episode 27!

Wet Ribbons EP#25!

re: ep 23 : alright, alright, i know, i know ... a liquid vapours cover show? playing original versions of songs we've heard over and over ... total cop out show. But this one will make it up to you! Playing lotsa records, new and old, along with some killer bands from music alley. Also, rumors are true, I did break a frettin' finger. It hurts like a bitch, but hopefully things get back in order for the liquid vapours mini-tour this december.

so, sit the fuck down, turn this up nice and loud, and let it take you away! and get yourself mentally prepared for the ultra kamp halloween radio show coming up on episode 26. Potentially with a guest host, and potentially with great halloween music!

Wet Ribbons EP# 24

Wet Ribbons EP#23!

And here we are, over at {insert new name here} studios in Harlot-town PEI. The kind new neighbor folks upstairs don't seem to know much about piece and quiet, so maybe we'll teach them a thing or two about rock 'n' roll. Treble and reverb are way easier on the old ear drums than the Shania Twain foot stomps going on upstairs the past week. Sleeping don't come easy when keith urban is in town on a friday night. But I digress ...

Episode 23! Loosely based on Mal Thursday's theme of "songs I taught the malarians" —we bring you "songs the liquid vapours kinda know." Songs we've covered at shows, and songs we fool around with at jams. Some of these songs have actually been played on the radio show before, but .. hell. ... . .. who cares.

Episode #24 is coming at ya quicker then normal too, likely in the next day or so, so, keep your eyes peeled!

Wet Ribbons EP#22!

"We don't take no notes, no budget"
I don't feel like writing show notes. Just tune in, download, subscribe ...
Crack a beer, and settle in for this lame-ass hurricane earl, whilst listening to some fine fine music.
ya dig?

Wet Ribbons EP#21! Happy Birthday!

So, those of you stocking us over on twitter probably knew a little while ago that this episode, this VERY episode #21 ... is our one year anniversary. We couldn't be more stoked here over at the Wet Ribbons HQ, but we're not quite sure why we've made it this far...

Great background tunes? My smashing personality? Our guest hosts feeding me too much liquor? Maybe it's our "thee radio show" segments that allow us to keep growing? Or perhaps it's just because we have nothing to do, and we're just sick of the am/fm scene?

Whatever the reason .. we're still alive and kicking, so sit back, crack a can of cheap domestic beer, and turn this one up! freaks!

And while you're at it ... hit up the blog, or itunes (where you no doubt subscribe to the show, right?) and dig through the archives. And with any luck, we'll catch you on episode #22.

Wet Ribbons #20!

bamma.
Here is your Wet Ribbons Episode #20! Lofi pop garage punk! An eclectic mix of some of my favorites ... but with a twist! Each song/band has some sort of a c-c-c-c-c-connection with another on the show. Some connections go as far as bands sharing members, song writers, or maybe just the fact that two bands might have guitars, or be from the same canadian province. Who knows.

And with that ... i'll leave you to it.

next show ... some more vinyl goodies, and because the next episode is a very special episode for us over at wet ribbons HQ, we should have some special treats for ya. I'm a little too excited ... so I'm going to try hardest not to reveal anything to you earlier then next show. That is, unless you catch me tweeting about it before hand. or something. yeah. we'll see. Enjoy!

Wet Ribbons EP#19 / Thee Radio Show #13

Thee Radio Show & Wet Ribbons presents ... the first official split episode and the second official "record yourself drunk" episode (see EP#11). I set up shop for a week over at TRS headquarters, and we promptly started shooting whiskey, getting giddy, and playing some mighty fine records. This particular weekend seemed to coincide with the G20 summit. Yeah, I know ... I haven't heard of it before either. So, in honor (sorta) of our peeps on the streets that weekend, we have a nasty set dedicated to you today, and tons of other great sets of genuine rock 'n' roll.

Send the show to a friend, and send us your hate mail!

Don't forget to check out Thee Radio Show #14, which is sure to be an even messier, filthier, more neurotic radio show (well, on my part at least). AND Wet Ribbons EP #20 is getting queued up —so get ready for some lofi pop hits.

Wet Ribbons EP#18!

ALL HITS! yes, great songs by great bands that you know and love. You know this stuff, and you can't deny this stuff (for the most part, anyway). This show doesn't even need any notes, I'm just going to let you roll with it.

comment below!

next show .... live and drunk as hell in TORONTO! I spent a few days hanging in person with Thee Radio Show host, and MY brother from another mother .. . John Bruce Affleck. Recorded some radios shows and drank the many exquisite spirits toronto had to offer us. So, next wet ribbons podcast is a DOUBLE WHAMMY! Thee Radio Show / Wet Ribbons.

enjoy ...

Wet Ribbons EP#17!

Dudes and Dykes! We're back with another rock 'n' roll set of garage favorites, power pop, and ass whoopin' country hits! Well ... not entirely, but a killer set nonetheless. Gonna hear some tracks by Those Darlins, White Wires, Lucky Pierre, and a 20-something minute set from John Bruce over at Thee Radio Show headquarters in the big TO.

Enjoy and comment on the show!

Next episode, it's very possible that we can leak some of the new offerings by none other then the liquid vapours —who are gearing up for another release this summer. And I'm particularly interested in this because I'm in that band! Now, enjoy the show!

Wet Ribbons EP#16 NEW WAVE TAKEOVER!

That's right friends! You've heard correctly, this episode is the new wave takeover! Erin is siting behind the mic, so hang tight and tune in for a great show —spinning some classic plastic a la devo, blondie, pet shop boys, and BOWIE!

And as always, don't forget to comment on the show, tell a friend, and subscribe!
cheers!

Wet Ribbons #14.5 (15)

And, since the wine was flowing smoothly, we have our first back to back shows! EP 14.5 brings you the all ska/rocksteady show! Now, my ska collection isn't very large, and I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on everything ska, but this should be a pretty decent mix of some classics, mixed with some 90s punk/ska, right up to 2009's "ready set go" by Charlottetown's "the sidewalks." So, kick off them heels and dance the night away!

And if you have any ska suggestions for me, let me know, I'm always open to hear what I'm missing. Using twitter? catch me at twitter.com/wetribbons

—j

Wet Ribbons EP #14

Here we are again. Another saturday night. Another box of wine. And a killer set of some of my current favorite bands. Gonna hear a preview of "east infection" —7" comp on foul & fair records. Stolen minks, rantouls, tokoyo electron, happy birthday (king tuff), and many more. All hits, my friends! All hits!

—j

Sunday, May 2, 2010

Wet Ribbons #13!

Lucky episode 13. Another great fucking set of killer tracks, featuring the likes of holy cobras, dead ghosts, meat curtains, thee almighty handclaps, new mark sultan, new white wires, and tons more. I'm too lazy to write up all the show notes, etc ...
next show ... another super great set lined up ... so look out! And for the next next show (EP 15) we're thinking of a ska/rocksteady show ... yay/nay?

—j

Wet Ribbons #12!

We're back! And a little sooner then usual too! Gotta make up to all those subscribers we lost after putting you guys through that 74 minute train wreck on EP #11. So, this evening I bring you the "midnight show!" — not because it's midnight or horror themed, but just because it's the 12th episode and the show just happened to be recorded around midnight. Not Spinning any records, just some mp3s from my personal collection.
espero que usted goce de él!

—j

Saturday, April 17, 2010

Wet Ribbons #11!

Wowsers! We're making history over here at Back Step Studios this week. Our first podcast recorded with a guest host (the almighty Bill Vapour!), our first special programming insert segment (c/o thee radio show), and our first show to ever hit over 30 minutes (clocking in at a staggering 74 minutes!).

And on top of that, this is by far the most banter-ridden/annoying episode to date. So we plan on losing many many subscribers this week!

But if you can ignore our drunken non-sense, you might be able to enjoy some killer tracks by the likes of Billy Childish, Heavy Trash, Hasil Adkins, along with some bands a little closer to home ... like ... The Outbred Inlaws, a new track by Mess Folk, and a Vapours cover of the Sneaky Pinks!

—j

Saturday, April 3, 2010

Wet Ribbons #10!

Fast Fast Fast — episode 10 is the speedy fuck-up show! I didn't really feel like "planning" a show, so instead, I just grabbed a bunch of records and MP3s from itunes and started rolling with it. It's the first sunny +20ºC weekend this year, so I'm not wasting time with this episode... I'd rather go grab the bike, cruise around in the sun, and perhaps sip on a couple beer or two. But what better way to spend your hot sunny weekend then listening to 25 minutes of rock 'n' roll!

And by the way, I signed off episode 10 by saying "your listening to episode 8 ... " I wasn't trying to fool ya, I like living in the past. With that being said .. . . next episode ... gonna make some slight changes to the format, but that'll be a surprise for next show. Also, gonna play some tunes by the Outbred Inlaws (Toronto) as soon as their tunes come in the mail. Stay tuned for that! Enjoy!

—josh

Wet Ribbons #9!

On this episode, we hear tracks from the likes of the White Wires, Reigning Sound, The Back CCs!, Dead Ghosts! Just to mention a few. This one's a real rocker, my friends. Special thanks to all the bands for lettin' me spin their tunes.

next show: no sure yet. But I'm sure I'll come up with somethin'!

—j

Saturday, February 27, 2010

Wet Ribbons #8!

A few weeks in the works, but well worth it my friends. I was in communication with a number of local bands over the past month, so we have some roaring tracks to present to you by the likes of The Stolen Minks, The Numbered Head, Rebecca's Room, & 3 piece Suit! And through the magic of "internet" I got a hold of Mark Sultan, as well as some dudes from Demons Claws —so, you can bet I'll be spinning some of those records. And that's not all! .... Thee Fine Lines, Thee Almighty Handclaps, Boom Boom & the Long Sex!

And don't forget friends, these broadcasts are recorded live and are unscripted —so ignore my terrible banter and muck-ups. Can ya deal?

Next episode ... haven't decided yet ... might spin some more records, cue up some cassettes and wing it. Sounds promising doesn't it?! Bam!

WET RIBBONS #7!

Here we are again, back for some more rock 'n' roll and junk. Firstly, I'll have to apologize for the messy nature of this show (ah, heck, they're all messy), but trying to push all these buttons, talk about the bands (not having any notes) ... bah ... it's too much brain power. And that's a dwindling resource lately. ha.

Todays show, hear some stuff by some east coast(ish) bands: Plug Uglies, Strawmen (live!), Letter H, Cold Wraps; and then some not so local bands. Got a new intro too. This one may stick, cause I'm sick of trying to come up with one for each show. bam! Let me know what'cha think of it all, folks. Comments are below. So, is that dandy little subscribe button that lets you have this show delivered to you directly via itunes!

Saturday, January 9, 2010

Wet Ribbons #6!

Bam! Episode #6! Well, as requested, here's the all electronic(ish), ambient, experimental, weirdo show! As some of you may know, I've been a strong advocate for experimental electronic junk for many many years, and here we have a small collection of some current/past projects I like. We're going to hear some Writhe (Summerside, PE), Gypsy Brides (PEI/NS?), La Compliqué (Charlottetown), and a short story by Daniel Bay (Toronto). Episode #7 —more punk rock 'n' roll! Gonna likely hear some more Live Strawmen, letter H, Plug Uglies, and I'll probably throw in another Euro band. Might even debut another track off the unreleased vapours record? yikes!

Saturday, December 19, 2009

Wet Ribbons #5

Epi 5! Who knew we'd make it this far! Short set today (because some bands aren't returning my emails), but a fucking great set. Recorded live here at back step studios, playing some vinyls along with some other great mp3s. Bands ... send me your songs, and your records, and your tapes. The dirtier the better.
cheers.

Saturday, December 12, 2009

Wet Ribbons #4 —The Liquid Vapours!

As promised ... a seemingly ALL VAPOURS show! Featuring some never before heard live demos, outtakes, a bootleg from the Oct 24th show! and we'll even debut a studio track from the forthcoming EP. Check out The Liquid Vapours on myspace and keep yourself up to date.

Saturday, November 28, 2009

Mess Folk!

yes, yes, yes! ... episode 3 is here, and it's all MESS FOLK! Features an exclusive recording of their October 24th show at the Upstairs. Check it out, folks ... and don't forget to visit their myspace, go to their next show, and buy their new 7" released on Hozac records.

Stay tuned for the next episode ... liquid vapours debut some kickass live recordings in anticipation for the EP release this New Year.

Tuesday, September 29, 2009

Wet Ribbons #2

Well ... since there's only been one episode and no standards have really been set in stone ... and since nobody has sent me anything new .... here's ONE song. "Crackhouse" —rough and dirty bootleg from a Liquid Vapours practice. This one is still in the works, but nice and catchy nontheless.
enjoy ... tell your friends, and send me some stuff to play dammit!

wet ribbons #1

Hey there good folks. This is the wet ribbons first official episode — songs we like, by people we know.
... have a listen, subscribe and have all sorts kick ass rock 'n' roll delivered directly to your computer.
cheers!
